When Cyrus king of Persia gave the decree for Israel to return and build the temple, not everyone was enthusiastic. Supposedly there were hundreds of thousands of Jews in captivity but on fifty thousand were willing to return to build the temple. The majority were not prepared to leave their comfortable routine. Their attitude was indifference to move or build a temple for God. When they did return and restoration of the temple began under Ezra they gave thanks when they laid the foundation.

Ezra 3:10-11 When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the LORD, according to the ordinance of David king of Israel. 11 And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the LORD:

“For He is good, For His mercy endures forever toward Israel.”

Then all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.

Thanksgiving lays the foundation, so any foundation laid without thanksgiving is weak. It doesn’t matter how magnificent the building looks, without the right foundation it is faulty. At the start of something, whether it’s a business, ministry or relationship, thanksgiving should be the sound that is woven into the foundation stones of it. The foundations of a work should not be laid without first being thankful to God for it. There is wisdom in this practice as it helps determine if God is actually in it or not. If it’s not something you can give Him thanks for, it’s questionable if it was His idea in the first place.

A life devoid of thanksgiving is one not operating at full strength. If you are wondering why things are shaky in your life it might be because your life is lacking thanksgiving. Don’t wait another minute.

I suggest that you start right now and give Him thanks for saving you. This is the first step to strengthen the foundations of your walk with God. Do it daily and you will lay the foundations for life.
